Geography

Geography Subject Overview

Our vision:

The study of Geography is important as it promotes a deeper understanding of our ever-changing world. It gives young people an insight into, and time to reflect on, human interaction with the planet to enable them to make their own judgements on the future.  At William Edwards, we give pupils the opportunity to explore the world and access different cultures, landscapes and environments – locally, nationally and internationally. We have a broad curriculum that intends to equip pupils with the ability to:

  • Want to learn and enjoy learning about the geographical systems surrounding the world.
  • Develop further contextual knowledge of globally significant places around the world and understand the processes that give rise to their key physical and human geographical features.
  • Develop greater competences in using geographical information, concepts and skills in analysing and interpreting different data sources.
  • Continue to enrich their locational knowledge and environmental understanding.

In the Geography department, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our classrooms.  Our teachers have wealth of experience and are widely travelled, allowing for a diverse curriculum. We believe in developing independent thinkers so teach each unit through enquiry questions. This enables pupils to discuss, debate and examine geographical data, before making their own informed decisions.

We see our key objectives as:

  • Providing time to consider how the world and its many interconnections shape environments.
  • Studying Geography through our six golden threads; Geographical Skills, Human Geography, Physical Geography, Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge and Fieldwork.
  • Allowing pupils time to identify their place and impact in/on the world.

As a Geography department, we believe that Geography is important to a student’s programme of study for a number of reasons:

  • Geography opens our eyes to the wonderful world we live in.
  • It allows us to understand and question the many geographical systems surrounding us.
  • It teaches us to learn and make decisions on the type of global citizen we want to be.
