Welcome to William Edwards School

newsteveOn behalf of all of our Students, Staff and Governors, welcome to the William Edwards School website.

William Edwards is an Outstanding 11 – 16 mixed comprehensive school, serving the local community. The school has been ‘Outstanding’ for 7 years, over two Ofsted inspections and is an exceptionally, successful, progressive, challenging and enjoyable place for young people and teachers to learn together. It was named ‘Educational Establishment of the Year’ at the National ERA awards and when the Secretary of State for Education visited the school recently she said that William Edwards was “an outstanding school doing great things for its pupils. It’s a remarkable success”.

The school is a progressive and successful 11-16 mixed comprehensive school with a dedicated, fully qualified and committed staff who work together with students, parents and governors to create outstanding opportunities for academic and personal progress, both in the classroom and in numerous out-of-school learning experiences. As well as having a national reputation for sport, the Arts at William Edwards are extremely strong. Dance, Drama and Music performances are of an extremely high standard and the School Dance troupe regularly performs at high profile events and venues, both nationally and internationally. It is one of only a small number of secondary schools across the country to hold the Artsmark Platinum Award.

Academically, the school’s broad and balanced curriculum offer has resulted in stunning GCSE results in 2017, the strongest in its history. 83% of pupils achieved at least a new grade 4 in English and 80% achieved the same in Maths. In Science, 76% of students achieved at least 2 ‘C’ grades. In all subjects, performance was significantly above the 2017 national average and demonstrates once again that students at the school make excellent progress in line with the top 10% of schools nationally.

In recent years Governors have invested over £3 million into supporting teaching and learning. New learning spaces, 8 court Badminton hall, redesigned classrooms and technological enhancements have ensured that innovation remains central to the school’s ethos. The learning experience for students is enjoyable and stimulating.

As the strategic lead school for the Thurrock Teaching School Alliance, William Edwards is at the forefront of teacher training and professional development across the borough. The school is passionate about developing staff so that the learning in its classrooms is challenging, relevant and memorable. The school is proud of its students and the breadth of experiences they have at William Edwards is fundamental to their development as responsible, self-aware and resilient young people who are ready to make a positive contribution in their community.

Following the schools most recent inspection in March 2017, Ofsted said “pupils behave exceptionally well in lessons and when moving around the school. They wear their uniform smartly. Pupils respect their teachers and one another”.

Together with you and your children, we will be reaching further and higher each year, to ensure that your child’s school experience provides them with the very best start to their future life, whatever that may hold.

The School Ethos.

Headteacher
