Construction

Construction and the built environment Subject Overview

Our vision:

Construction is a vocational Level 1/2 course that allows learners to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the Construction sector and a range of core craft and building services skills with particular focus on bricklaying before they embark on post 16 courses and apprenticeships.  There are opportunities for hands-on learning, which can be a positive experience for young people who like to apply practically what they learn in the classroom.

We see the development and retention of knowledge as being key outcomes for our learners to be successful. They will be exposed to ‘new’ technical information required to meet the assessment criteria for the course. Both internally and externally assessed work will be set in vocational scenarios where they have to apply what they have learnt to be able to meet the challenges posed of them.

We also aim to support the development of skills such as researching, interpreting and analysing information, identifying the infrastructure required for safe and efficient work and in understanding how client needs can shape building design. The externally assessed component prepares learners as they progress either into higher levels of vocational learning or to related academic qualifications, by providing independent assessment evidence of learning alongside the portfolio-based assessment.

We aim to build confidence in our learners through the flexibility afforded to us in the collection of evidence for internal assessment, which can be generated through a range of activities, including written work, practical performance and verbal presentations. This gives opportunities for all learning styles to succeed in simulated working conditions.

We expose the learners to practical learning experiences and support them as they are introduced to commonly used hand tools, equipment and craft skills needed to construct basic brickwork and blockwork structures. We place emphasis on the correct selection and safe use of the appropriate tools and equipment whilst they develop their competencies.

The staff have strong subject knowledge and are experienced at delivering both the theory and the practical elements of the course. They thrive when creating a lively, but disciplined, learning environment which is open to all. Learners are encouraged to scrutinise their work for quality and use reflection as a way of understanding what needs to happen to make necessary improvements. The staff value practice and see considered repetition as a means to get better. They offer regular assessment feedback to coach development.

The ultimate goal is for learners to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement, whilst developing their employability skills to meet industry standards for their own behaviour and performance, which will make them more effective in the workplace.

We see our key objectives as:

  • Creating an environment where learners are able to experience practical construction skills and are supported to develop them to industry standard.
  • Developing subject specific knowledge that engenders deeper understanding of how low rise buildings are planned, designed and then constructed.
  • Fostering opportunities for learners to learn, and to be assessed, in a range of styles that will challenge them in a supportive environment.
  • Building the confidence and employability skills for the learners to thrive in their future vocational studies and careers.

As a department, we believe that Construction is important to a student’s programme of study for a number of reasons:

  • Construction plays a significant role in our everyday lives.
  • It allows understanding of the work of the sector and of the employment opportunities that exist.
  • It gives an insight into the knowledge and skills required for a career in the industry and develops employability skills.
