William Edwards School

Attendance

Supporting pupils and parents by working together to address any in-school barriers to attendance is the focus of the Attendance Team as a whole, along with celebrating ongoing success and rewarding students for improved attendance.

  • Our attendance target for all students is no more than four missed school days in an academic year.
  • This level of attendance will enable students to make the best possible progress and will therefore have a direct impact on their futures.

The Importance of Attending School

Good attendance and punctuality increase your child’s chances of success. Poor attendance and punctuality will have a detrimental affect your child’s achievements and outcomes.

What is the overall attendance target for each student?

Our overall attendance target is 95% for every pupil. However, at William Edwards School we wish to celebrate the success of pupils and encourage them to attend for 100% of the time they can. Sometimes it may not be possible for the child to attend every day as circumstances such as a bereavement or hospital appointment may be out of their control. Pupils will be rewarded monthly if they attend 100% of the time possible to them.

William Edwards would also like to challenge its pupils and inspire them to hit the attendance target of no more than four missed school days across the academic year (1 day every 2 half-terms plus 1 day for any other absence). Pupils who take on this challenge successfully will be acknowledged at the end of each academic year.

What time should my child be on site?

The school gate opens at 8.00am where pupils are invited to attend structured morning sessions such as revision, use of the library or sporting activities. Pupils are also invited to use the canteen facilities before the school day begins. 8:00am to 8:30am is additional social time for children to spend with their friends, eating their breakfast or catching up other members of staff.

We reward students with excellent attendance and punctuality at William Edwards monthly. Pupils also have the opportunity to receive special rewards at the end of each term and academic year. An example of this would be identified pupils are invited to attend our school rewards afternoon which we run three times a year.

It is the responsibility of school and parents/carers to ensure that children attend school to improve their chances of success. The Attendance Team, along with other members of staff works with families to remove any barriers to attendance by building strong relationships and working together to put the right support in place.
